Stupid things kids do.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - During these 'dog days of summer' air conditioning units are working overtime trying to keep homes and offices cooled down.

But many of those air conditioning units are becoming the target of kids wanting to drain the freon gas from inside and inhale it, sometimes with deadly results.

"They feel a euphoria, light-headiness and they may pass out. But it's that euphoria that they're going after. Unfortunately what these kids don't know is there is long term damage to the body from breathing in freon gas," said Doctor Donna Carney at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Authorities say the way the kids are using the gas to get high is by placing a plastic bag over there head. Then they fill the bag with freon gas. It's heavier then oxygen so it forces the oxygen out of the bag, leaving only the dangerous gas.

"Even the first time that they would do it they could die. The long term if they continue to do this is memory problems, they can suffer permanent liver damage, kidney damage, lung damage and brain damage. And all is this is irreversible," Doctor Carney said.

Woah! Now that is dangerous! Jeez, Nitrous oxide is a lot safer, though you can still hurt yourself pretty badly. This sounds like the only reason they're getting high is oxygen deprivation.

Geez... What kids do for a high...

When I worked as an HVAC tech, I had a call at two houses side by side, one refrig did not work and the other a/c not working. After two hours of troubleshooting I found the prob a pin hole in the freeze line to kid vising ws huffing. He laso did the same thing to the A/c unit next door.

Did you notice the kid laying in the bushes with his eyes rolling in the back of his head? It's a shame these kids have no clue what they are really doing.

On a related storie, the small 850 population country biblebelt town I grew up in had a Homicide incident. What happened, was 3 teens huffed gold spray paint. They then at 2 am, went to the house of the really nice pentecost old women who would do anything for anyone. They had her cook for them, she did willingly. Then they wanted her money, she only had enough for church, she denied their request, so they beat it...shot her little cockerspanial dog because it was barking. Then they shot her to death. They also practiced necrophilia Then they stole her car, drove it and got it stuck in a field and then went and robbed the gas mart which was clsoed and empty at the time and then STOLE MY bicycle from behind my house, note i was on my front porch seeing why the gas mart alarm was sounding. Meaning 3 killers were about 8 feet from me, glad they didnt notice me to be honest.

They were caught of course and are in prison for life...

I thought I would share this. The old woman was a dear friend of mine. I was a kid then and had a dog like hers and would go let the dogs play together. This incident was so horrible but it thrives me even more to become a Police Officer and prevent this sort of horrible act...

When I was in the Army two guys went into intensive care for drinking brake fluid. I never claimed the Army preferred smart people.
