Students from 20 colleges and universities who met on the National Mall were tasked with one simple mission: to build a completely solar-powered, 800-square-foot house with a working washer and dryer and enough power to run a computer and a TV.
Sponsored primarily by the Department of Energy, last week’s Solar Decathlon was more than a school project. The two-year contest complemented President Bush's Solar America Initiative, which seeks to make solar energy cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity by 2015.
